Translating Text to Your Language

January 21, 2025

by CCIH

As a global organization with members from many countries speaking various languages, we deeply value our community’s richness and diversity. To better support our members in accessing and understanding information, we are providing guidance on how to use various tools for translating written and verbal content into the language of your choice.

These tools include platforms like Google Translate, ChatGPT, and other translation resources. Here, we are sharing instructions to help you use these tools for translating emails, presentations, and even live discussions.

We hope these resources empower you to connect and engage fully with our global network. Please note that technology changes frequently and while we will try to keep this page current, there may be new changes not incorporated here.

Translating Emails

When you receive an email from CCIH in English, you may use the following methods to translate the text:

Gmail Users
If you use Gmail, click the three dots known as the More menu in the top right corner of the message. Choose Translate in the dropdown menu. Gmail will suggest translating the message into your default language.

Email Systems Other than Gmail
If you use a different email provider than Gmail, you can translate the text using the Google Translate Website, ChatGPT, or a Browser Extension.

  1. Google Translate
    1. Copy the text of the email.
    2. Access Google Translate.
    3. Paste the email content into the left box, select the target language, and view the translation in the right box.
  2. ChatGPT
    1. Access the ChatGPT site. You may need to create an account if you’re new to the site.
    2. Paste or type the text you want to translate with “To ‘Insert your language’” in front of it. For example: To French:
  3. Browser Extensions
    1. Install a browser extension like Google Translate for Chrome or Microsoft Translator for Edge.
    2. Highlight the text in the email and use the extension to translate it instantly.

Using Google Translate with Your Camera

If you are watching a presentation with a PowerPoint or reading printed text, you can now use your phone camera to scan text and translate it to your language using Google Translate.

  1. Download and Open the App:
    1. If you haven’t already, download the Google Translate app from the App Store (iOS) or Google Play Store (Android).
    2. Open the app once it’s installed.
  2. Set the Languages:
    1. At the top or bottom of the screen, select the language pair:
      1. Left side: The source language (the language in the image). If you’re unsure, choose “Detect language.”
      2. Right side: The target language (the language you want to translate into).
  3. Tap the Camera Icon:
    1. On the app’s home screen, tap the Camera icon. This opens the camera mode.
  4. Point Your Camera at the Text:
    1. Aim your phone’s camera at the text you want to translate.
  5. View the Translation:
    1. The app displays the translated text directly on the screen.
    2. You can copy the translation or hear it read aloud by tapping the speaker icon.
