The organizers of the workshop advertised in a previous message (and
repeated below), The Effectiveness of Community-Based Primary Health Care
in Improving Child Health: A Review of the Evidence and Findings from the
Field, announce that they have moved the venue of the event to the
headquarters of the Pan American Health Organization. This move to a much
larger room was necessitated by the overwhelming response to the call for
registration. Please see the details below.

Dr. Mirta Roses Periago, Director of the Pan American Health Organization,
and her staff have made available to us their main conference room at the

you who would like to attend but were not able to register earlier, we are
now accepting new registrants.

Hoar know.
Over the past two years, a Task Force of the Working Group on CBPHC has been
guiding a review of the effectiveness of CBPHC in improving child health.
The workshop will focus on the findings from this review and will also
provide an opportunity for current insights provided by distinguished CBPHC
practitioners.
In the morning, Paul Freeman and Henry Perry will summarize the findings of
the CBPHC review and its implications for policy, practice and research.
Paul and Henry are Co-Chairs of the Task Force guiding the review. Paul is
an international public health consultant based in Seattle, WA, and Henry is
Carl Taylor Professor for Equity and Empowerment at Future Generations, in
Franklin, WV. Several exemplary case studies of outstanding examples of
CBPHC in improving child health will also be presented.
This review now benefits from the active collaboration of a distinguished
Expert Review Panel from around the world, the World Health Organization,
UNICEF, and the World Bank.
Joining us for the afternoon will be Lisa Howard-Grabman and James Phillips.
Lisa is a renowned trainer in community empowerment and developer of the
Warmi method of womens empowerment for improving maternal and perinatal
health, which is now being implemented in a number of countries and showing
exciting results. James Phillips is a long-time Senior Associate in the
Policy Research Division of the Population Council and has worked since 1999
on the Navrongo Initiative in Ghana, which is one of the exciting
community-based programs to improve child health which has been identified
by our review.
The workshop will be highly interactive. Participants at all levels of
public health experience are welcome from students to highly seasoned
professionals. Registration for the APHA Annual Meeting is not required.
The cost is $10 (payable at the door).
