CCIH Initiates Faith-Based Discussion at the London Family Planning Summit Print {sharethis label=}

CCIH initiated a consultation of faith-based organizations to be held the day after the high-level Family Planning Summit organized by the UK Department of International Development and the Gates Foundation in London on July 11. CCIH Executive Director Ray Martin was invited to attend the summit by the organizers, highlighting the vital role of the faith community in promoting and providing health services across the globe. Leaders from around the world will be committing to expanding efforts to provide family planning information and services to those who are not presently reached. CCIH plans to expand the dialogue about the role faith-based organizations can play in advocacy and programs to increase family planning services at the July 12 meeting of FBOs.

The July 12 meeting is open to anyone, including participants in the Family Planning Summit, both faith-based and anyone wanting to dialogue and partner with faith-based organizations. The goals of the meeting of faith-based organizations are to discuss the importance of involvement of religious leaders and faith-based organizations in family planning, share how organizations approach family planning to be acceptable in their respective organizations and faith communities, report on some actual family planning programs of faith-based organizations, discuss approaches to faith community advocacy for global family planning in ways acceptable to religious communities, and discuss next steps for faith-based organization involvement in both family planning advocacy and programming.

A piece by Lauren VanEnk of CCIH affiliate, the Institute for Reproductive Health, appeared on K4Health about the opportunity provided by the summit to further the efforts of many in the faith community to show the support of people of faith for family planning and the role of faith-based organizations in family planning services and advocacy.
